چکیده

A 3-stage pulse tube cooler has been designed to operate at 10¶K. The staged cooler uses the same compressor and parallel staging configuration for the 1 st and 2 nd stages as previously employed for our delivered High Capacity Cryocooler (HCC). The 2 nd and 3 rd stages are in a serial configuration. The addition of the third stage extends the performance of this cooler to lower operating temperatures below 10¶K.

Parametric Numerical Study of Off-Axis Pulse Tube Losses

Recently there has been an emphasis on applying numerical modeling, with varying degrees of complexity, to the study of the notorious sensitivity of the pulse tube cryocooler to off-axis operation. Previous work has demonstrated the suitability of applying multi-dimensional CFD simulation to the pulse tube cryocooler both as a whole and at the component level for qualitative and quantitative an...

Vapor Precooling in a Pulse Tube Liquefier

Experiments were performed to study the effects of introducing vapor into a dewar where a coaxial pulse tube refrigerator was used as a liquefier in the neck of the dewar. We were concerned about how the introduction of vapor might impact the refrigeration load as the vapor barrier in the neck of the dewar is disturbed. Three experiments were performed where the input power to the cooler was he...

Comparative Numerical Study of Pulse Tube Refrigerators

The focus of this work is the modeling and performance comparison of different models of pulse tube refrigerators, namely, the Orifice Pulse Tube Refrigerator (OPTR) and the Inertancetube Pulse Tube Refrigerator (IPTR) with both in-line as well as coaxial configurations. A detailed analysis of the flow and heat transfer in various components of the above mentioned models under oscillating flow ...

AIRS Cryocooler System Design and Development

JPL’s Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument is based on a cryogenically cooled infrared spectrometer that uses a pair of pulse tube cryocoolers operating at 55 K to cool the HgCdTe focal plane to 58 K; the instrument also includes cryoradiators at 150 K and 190 K to cool the overall optical bench to 150 K. The cryocooler system design is a key part of the instrument development and foc...

Development of 15 K Pulse Tube Cold Fingers for Space Applications at CEA/SBT

Pulse tube coolers for space applications have been developed for many years at CEA/SBT. After successful developments of products in the 50 – 80 K range, our focus has changed to temperature below 20 K. Our work is based on compressors delivering about 100 W of mechanical input power to the cold fingers with a goal of several hundred milliwatts of cooling power. Most of the work performed to a...
